Take Action Against " Maternal Profiling"

Have you experienced workplace discrimination because of your parental status or family responsibilities (maternal profiling)?

The Center for WorkLife Law aims to end employment discrimination against workers who have family responsibilities. This type of discrimination has a name: Family Responsibilities Discrimination. Pregnant women, mothers and fathers of young children, and employees with aging parents or sick spouses/partners may find themselves discriminated against. They may be rejected for employment, demoted, harassed, passed over for promotion, or terminated -- despite good performance evaluations -- simply becaus ... Make Child's Play Out of Presidential Politics

If someone were to ask you who is running for President in 2008, lots of names would pop into your head, but have you heard of Susie Flynn? She has a single issue platform: America needs to offer health insurance to the 9 million children in this country who don't have it.

"Susie" is actually a fictitious character created by Minneapolis-based advertising agency, Fallon Worldwide, for its pro bono client, the Children's Defense Fund. The campaign is aimed at focusing attention on the serious issue of children's health insurance.

In a nutshell, chronic budget shortfalls, often confusing enrollment proce ... Continue reading Make Child's Play Out of Presidential Politics.

Teach your Kids the Value of Giving to Others

By Elisabeth Cremer and Julie Burton

Raising caring, appreciative, compassionate, and generous children is a daunting task, given the somewhat egocentric world we live in. Parents want to give children the best life possible, and thus kids often become accustomed to getting virtually everything they want, and are not at all satisfied by getting just what they need. To prevent children from developing a serious case of the "gimmies," and to reverse some of the expectations they have established, kids need to see first-hand the struggles of others. But the exposure alone is not enough. It is essential to teach our kids that ... Continue reading Teach your Kids the Value of Giving to Others.

From cable shows on celebrities who obsess about recycling, to coalitions of Hollywood stars building solar-powered homes, it's still in style to be "green."

Anyone who thought environmental consciousness among celebrity types - and the general American public - would be a passing fancy will likely rethink their views as Earth Day 2007 approaches. On April 22, groups from elementary school classes to celebutante cliques will observe the day set aside to think about how we all care for the planet.

The environment has long been a favorite cause de celebre for celebrities. And the movement continues to gai ... Continue reading Earth Day Lives: Going Green is Still in Style.
