Last Minute Holiday Gifts for Less (Even Free)

These days, people are looking to save money any way they can, including on holiday gifts. A recent Gallup poll shows that 35 percent of Americans will be spending less this holiday season.

The Internet makes it easy to shop for good bargains, but many people don't know that it can also help them find items for little or no money at all.

Freecycle.org is a web site where people list things they own that they are giving away for free. The free membership allows users to search a local group to find out what's being given away in their city. It's possible to find everything from appliances to furniture and even pets.

There are also a growing number of web sites that connect users who wish to trade items. At SwapAGift.com, users can trade the gift cards they have, for the ones they want. Users simply list the cards they have, and can then choose from thousands of gift cards they can receive in return.

Zwaggle.com is a trading site for baby and kid clothing, toys and furniture. Users list the children's items they have and those they want. They then pay shipping when someone requests their items, and receive points which they can then use to "buy" the children's items they want.

For those looking to give media items as gifts, Swaptree.com is a trading site for books, CDs, DVDs and video games. Users add items they want to trade to their "Have List," and put items they would like to receive on their "Want List." The site's trading engine instantly shows the user all the items they can receive for the items they are trading. The only expense for members is the cost of shipping. To make it easy, postage labels can be bought and printed directly from the site.

"Bartering and trading have been around forever," said Greg Boesel, co-founder of Swaptree.com. "With the power of the Internet and our intelligent trading algorithms, we've put a 21st century spin on an age-old practice." Boesel adds that "Our site can help those looking to recycle some gifts after the holidays - you know, the book you got, and won't read again, the video games the kids got tired of playing, or the DVD you didn't have the heart to tell Grandma you'd already seen. Why not trade them for something you actually want, for free?"

'Tis the season for saving - and with the click of the mouse, it's easier than ever to do.
