Romantic Outings in the Twin Cities

By Megan Torrini

Whether you want to relax outside and watch a beautiful sunset in the warm months or snuggle with your honey alongside a fireplace in the winter months, the Minneapolis-St. Paul area boasts many romantic destinations. Although Minneapolis weather conditions can be extreme, there are plenty of romantic things to do no matter what the season. We've compiled our list of the 10 best Twin Cities romantic outings- so leave the kids with a sitter, plan a date and cozy up with your sweetie.

Walk the St. Anthony Falls Heritage Trail
Step back into Minneapolis history and take a leisurely walk hand in hand along the St. Anthony Falls Heritage Trail. The trail offers spectacular views of St. Anthony Falls and the Mississippi River.

Dine at the Historic Nicollet Island Inn
Reignite romance at the Nicollet Island Inn, one of the finest of Minneapolis restaurants. Resting on the scenic acreage of historic Nicollet Island, this restaurant offers Old World ambience, outstanding cuisine and a spectacular view of the city's birthplace on the Mississippi. The menu is European- inspired with an impressive wine list, and the experience itself will make a lasting impression on any couple.

Dinner and Dancing at Babalu
Step through the front door into the tropical atmosphere of Babula and you'll forget the Minneapolis weather outside. Located on Washington Ave N in Minneapolis, Babula serves outstanding Latin Caribbean food all week and salsa dancing on Saturdays, making for a hot date night.

Take a Carriage Ride
After a romantic dinner at the Nicollet Island Inn, take a carriage ride through Nicollet Mall, even in the winter. The Hitching Company provides blankets for when the weather is chilly, giving you a good excuse to snuggle up tight.

Take a Stroll Through Stillwater
Stillwater, Minnesota, which lies just outside the Twin Cities, is a historic lumber town located on the St. Croix River. Enjoy a picnic lunch along the St. Croix, window shop at many of the fine stores, take a stroll with your sweetheart along the riverfront at sunset, and relax with a moonlit gondola cruise.

Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is just one of the many things that make Minneapolis special. While the Garden set in downtown Minneapolis, it feels like it is worlds away. The sculptures are wonderful to see during the day or evening, but at night the city lights can be seen throughout the park. The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is open until midnight (and there are hidden security cameras throughout the area), so take a romantic stroll with your sweetie when it's quiet.

Ice Skate Together at The Depot, Minneapolis
Enjoy a romantic afternoon ice skating hand in hand at The Depot. Located in Minneapolis, The Depot is a renovated train depot now complete with a skating rink, water park and 2 hotels.

A Walk and an Ice Cream Cone at Lake Harriet
One of several of Minneapolis' Chain of Lakes, Lake Harriet is noted as one of the most beautiful lakes in Minnesota. Romance and relaxation can be found simply by strolling through the delightful Rose Garden, laying on a blanket listening to the outdoor concerts, grabbing an ice cream cone and walking leisurely around the lake together.

Dine by Fireplace at Forepaugh's
Located in Irvine Park, one of the most exclusive, and still one of the most beautiful, residential districts in St. Paul, is Forepaugh's. Forepaugh's is the former residence of St. Paul pioneer Joseph Lybrandt Forepaugh, who built this elegant Victorian house in 1870 for his wife Mary and their two small children. Enjoy continental cuisine next to the crackling fireplaces in this beautiful historic Victorian Manor.

Spend a Cozy Evening at the Covington Inn Bed and Breakfast
The Covington Inn is one of America's few floating bed and breakfasts. A restored 1946 towboat, the Covington is buoyed and buffered as it sits permanently moored on the Mississippi, within the reflection of downtown St. Paul's skyline. The Capitol, museums, theater, fine dining and shopping wait just across the bridge. The Covington offers a place for a quiet, romantic getaway, just for the two of you.
