Mothers and Work

Now celebrating its 20th Anniversary year, Mothers & More is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of mothers through support, education and advocacy. We support members as they navigate many personal, family and professional transitions during their active parenting years.

Locally, the Twin Cities East chapter is a growing network of mothers in Washington County, the newest of four Mothers & More chapters serving Minnesota. Life as Mom brings changes -- to your time, your work, your identity. We recognize that being a parent is one of many roles Moms play.

On October 3, 7:00-9:00 pm, The Twin Cites East chapter welcomes Kristin Maschka, past national Mothers & More board president, to discuss "Work Options that Work for Today's Mothers."

In July 2007, the Pew Research Center reported on a survey of US mothers with results showing an increased desire for part-time employment vs. full-time work outside the home over the past decade, a trend that holds both for mothers who have such jobs and those who don't. How does this translate in today's environment, such that mothers can provide essential caregiving work and obtain sustainable part-time employment?

Guest Kristin Maschka will lead discussion about ways to create work options that work for mothers and our families, answering these and other questions:

* How do I find or negotiate a reduced work schedule?
* What should I be doing if I want to re-enter the workforce now or down the road?
* What do I need to know about my rights as a mother in the workplace?
* What if I want to change careers or start my own business?

A Minnesota native, Maschka served four years as the national President of Mothers & More, and is an expert on mothers and the social, economic, and cultural forces that impact their lives. She has authored related articles and commentary for USA Today Magazine, Womens eNews and FORUM, the Mothers & More member publication. Print and radio media regularly call on her expertise, ex., USA Today, Money, The Christian Science Monitor, NPR's Marketplace, BBC London, and the nationally syndicated radio show Parents Journal.
