Giving Once, Giving Twice

By Julie Burton

This holiday season, you can feel twice as good when buying gifts for friends and loved ones. Many local, national and on-line retailers and manufacturers donate a percentage of their overall sales or sales of specific items to charitable causes-which makes it possible for you to make your shopping more purposeful by purchasing gifts that keep on giving.

So, when holiday shopping in the Twin Cities, here are some great "double-giving" gift ideas:

Help "Fight for the Cure" this holiday season by purchasing a Karen Klein's Tuscan Rose Candle decorated with authentic Florentine paper (11 oz. glass, burn time 70+ hours). Karen lost her mother to breast cancer and donates a percentage of all sales to breast cancer awareness. Sold locally for $24 at Wallflower in Plymouth. To order and find out when their next sale is, call 612-599-9673.

The kids will love Seraa, the Baby African Elephant, named after Seraa Wildlife Conservancy based in northern Kenya. The Conservancy saved Seraa when she fell into a deep, water-filled hole and couldn't get out. Origins sells the plush elephant for $15 and donates $3 per elephant sold to the Conservancy (through UK Charity Fauna & Flora International), which helps protect wildlife in Kenya. Available at Origins stores throughout the Twin Cities, and online.

For friends or family with a sweet tooth, you can support the "For the Love of Her Life" program, which benefits the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). Exclusive limited-edition Frango Pink Mint Chocolates are available only at Macy's stores and at macys.com. The mints come in a 1/3-pound box ($8.00) or 1 pound box ($18.00), featuring a design by Miranda Moss, a Minneapolis artist and breast cancer survivor. Macy's will donate $.50 per 1/3lb. box of Frango Mints sold and $1.00 per 1 lb. box sold.

To find hundreds of other "Pink" items that help support the BCRF go to their website. Locally, check out such stores as Coach, Sephora, Target, and Linens 'N Things for some great gifts like a Pink Sudoku electronic touch screen handheld game for $14.99 at Linens 'N Things or a multi-charm keyfob in pink and white tones featuring a pink ribbon for $58.00 at Coach stores.

Enhance any tree with this beautiful, Swarovski-encrusted ornament that supports the work of Children's Cancer Research Fund. Ornaments are available for $14.99 at Target stores or online. You can find other meaningful gifts supporting this cause at ChildrensCancer.

The Gap (PRODUCT) RED collection is available exclusively in select Gap adult stores and online. You can also go to " JoinRed to find other great (PRODUCT) RED items available like an Apple iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED™ Special Edition starting at $199, or a red H500 Bluetooth® Headset for $59.99 from Motorola.

For your fitness enthusiast friend or relative, go to DeezFit and purchase unique and fun athletic wear from around the world, handpicked by Dee, a Minneapolis-based fitness instructor and personal trainer. Five percent of their overall profits are donated to women's charities.
